Empire of the Sun

I just found this invite I photoshopped for a Empire Of The Sun themed BBQ at the office a few years ago. Can’t deny I’m pretty damn proud.

@ChunkyToast and I began to hear luscious electro-pop numbers leaking out of our A&R office in late 2007. For months the mysterious project remained behind locked doors, but after what felt like an eternity, it was revealed we had heard the result of longtime EMI darling Luke Steel and Nick Littlemore’s collaboration “Empire of the Sun”. I recall the meeting during which we were told there would be no bio and no press shots for this project; all imagery would be paintings. Paintings

Three years later and The Steele is headlining festivals across the world, I’m managing an online fanbase of half a million, and the “paintings” thing worked out better than anyone could have imagined.

I probably know the Walking On A Dream album better than my own sister’s voice by now… but the chorus from We Are The People gets me every time:

It’s only in retrospect that I can appreciate the video is truly stunning. It was shot in Mexico in the Icamole Desert, The Gardens of Las Pozas in Xilitla, and the town of Garcia in Monterrey. My colleague / Empire’s first marketing manager Brett flew to Mexico for the shoot and appears in a wolf costume at 4:35 during the Day of the Dead parade.
